John Walsh, who has overseen the athletic programs at Guyer High School for more than a decade, will relinquish his duties as the school’s athletic coordinator at the end of the school year.
Walsh, who was arrested in December for driving while intoxicated in Flower Mound and charged with a misdemeanor, has been disciplined internally by the district but will remain as the head football coach.
The district will take the remainder of the school year to review internal candidates and name a new athletic coordinator to oversee the boys’ and girls’ programs.
“We as a district hold all of our coaches, and especially our athletic coordinators, to a higher standard,” said Denton ISD Athletic Director Joey Florence. “Coach Walsh knows he made a mistake, understands he has damaged his role in the community as a head coach and the credibility he holds with his team, Guyer students and their families. During our conversations it’s been made clear that he needs to do whatever he can to repair any damage the incident has caused.”
Walsh is wrapping up his 11th year as the school’s football coach and has been the only head coach and athletic coordinator at the school since Guyer opened in 2005. He was the offensive coordinator and assistant athletic director at Brownwood High School prior to joining Denton ISD.
“I appreciate the support of my family, Denton ISD and the Guyer Wildcat community through this difficult time,“ Walsh said. “Words printed or said to apologize at this point would be redundant. I want to show with my future decision making and actions the gratitude I have for Denton ISD administration’s plan of action to move forward from this.”
